About Our
Fellowship
Our Vision
We desire to Reach Up to God for forgiveness and power and in worship and
prayer, to Reach In to ourselves allowing God to change us from the inside
out, and Reach Out to others, sharing with them the Good News of salvation
and the power of God to transform our lives, physically, spiritually and
mentally.
Our main purpose is to help people connect
with God, themselves and others in vital living relationship that
ultimately change us for the better. We do this through relevant
Bible teaching, prayer, fellowship and service.
Non-Denominational
River of Life is a Non-Denominational, Full Gospel Fellowship of
believers. The history of our church dates back to the 1880's.
Our fellowship began as a Baptist Church and remained Baptist until 2002.
In 2003 the church became non-denominational. We retained the name
Rockville Baptist Church as a way of honoring our heritage. After a
few years we felt like it was time to bring a new identity and prophetic
direction to the fellowship. In May of 2007 we changed the name to
River of Life.
Full Gospel
As a Full Gospel Church we believe in salvation by faith in
Jesus and the promise of Baptism of the Holy Spirit as a second work of
grace to empower believers to serve the Lord in the power of the Holy
Spirit. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit
taught in I Corinthians 12 are for every believer today, just as they were
in the days of the early Church.
Our Worship
Jesus told us that God desired people to worship Him in Spirit and in
truth. Our worship services blend a mixture of contemporary worship
choruses with traditional hymns. The congregation is encouraged to
worship in any way that is real and meaningful to them.
Our Preaching and Teaching
Sunday Morning messages are geared to the general congregation and may
include practical Biblical instruction and/or the salvation message. Every
message is designed to be practical and challenging. On Sunday
Evenings we gather in various home groups to share food, fellowship,
worship, ministry to one another and small group discussion. Wednesday Evenings are generally devoted to
teaching and prayer. Sunday School classes generally follow
a theme for a period of time, giving participants a thorough understanding
of a particular Biblical subject.
The Church - The Body of Christ
The Bible calls the Church the Body of Christ and declares Jesus to be the
Head of the Body. This is not a literary device, but rather a
functional reality. The Church is the Body of Christ in the world today.
We believe that Jesus, not a man, a ministry, or a denomination is head of
the Church. As the Body of Christ every believer is a priest to God
and man. Every member has both the privilege and responsibility to
serve God. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that God has ordained good works
for every person to do and I Corinthians 12 tells us that the gifts of the
holy Spirit are given to every person so that all may profit spiritually.
Paul sums these thoughts up in Ephesians 4 by saying the Body of Christ
ministers to itself in truth and love and grows closer together as it
matures in the Spirit.
Congregational Involvement
We DO NOT believe that Christianity is a spectator sport. Christians
we not meant to go to church to watch a few others do all the ministry.
We encourage and allow our members and guest to take part in the
gatherings by sharing whatever is on their heart, be it a testimony,
prayer request, song, verse, object lesson, teaching or a recognized gift
of the Holy Spirit. On occasion the congregation will carry the
entire service and there will not be just one person preaching, but
several.
Church Government
We believe in a plurality of Church government called Eldership.
Biblical Elders govern the Church as they seek the wisdom and guidance of
God.
Everyone is Welcome
The River is a family Church and everyone is welcome to visit or join.
We are not exclusive or closed. Conditions of membership are faith
in Jesus Christ and a conviction that you have been called to join us in
Worship and service.
Healing
We believe in divine healing through prayer. The book of Hebrews
declares that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.
If He healed people when He physically walked the earth, and through the
first century believers, he will heal people today through His Church.
To this the scriptures and our personal experience bears witness. We
generally pray for healing in every service and as people request it
individually.
